Chasing Defense: Week 4

This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.

This Week

Titans (@ Texans): This week we are rolling with the Titans as our #1 option. They play a Houston offense that has been struggling under the leadership of Brock Osweiler. Osweiler has thrown an interception in each of his first three games. The Titans defense is giving up just north of 18 points per game. This is a big divisional match-up, and one that I think will be a low scoring game.

Redskins (vs. Browns): We can’t totally take the Browns off of our radar. Cody Kessler will be back under center for his second start, but first game on the road as an NFL QB. The Redskins defense has not been very good to this point, but I can see them turning up the heat on the young rookie and forcing him into mistakes.

Cowboys (@ 49ers): The Cowboys have been a decent defensive team so far this season and now they get a 49ers offense that isn’t very good. If they can stop Carlos Hyde and force Blaine Gabbert to beat them, then I like their chances of coming away with a few turnovers.

Revisiting Last Week:

Dolphins (vs. Browns): The Dolphins just didn’t do the job for us against the Browns. In a week where defenses dominated, the Dolphins lay an egg. In must standard leagues the Dolphins netted you somewhere around 3 fantasy points. They gave 24 points to the Browns, had one fumble recover, and 4 sacks. Late in the game they did hit Cody Kessler and recover another fumble, but it was undone by an offsides penalty. The Dolphins aren’t going to help our season total, but it is a long year.

Raiders (@ Titans): If you were fortunate enough to not get the Dolphins in your league and had to settle with the Raiders then you were better off. The Raiders finished with 9 points in standard defensive scoring leagues after giving up 10 points, grabbing two interceptions, a fumble recovery, and a sack. Marcus Mariota has looked really rough so far this year, and may be a QB we want to chase.

Buccaneers (vs. Rams): The Bucs managed to give up 37 points to the Rams. A Case Keenum led offense. Fortunately, if you had to grab the Bucs in a pinch, they at least scored a touchdown for your team. They also had one interception, one fumble recovery, and a single sack which netted them about 8 fantasy points.

Pipe Dream:(Team we wish we picked up)

Eagles (vs. Steelers) or Bills (vs. Cardinals): Not sure we could have predicted either of these two against what looked like high powered offenses coming into the game. The Eagles stifled Big Ben and the Steelers only allowing 3 points, grabbing one interception, a fumbler recovery, and a sack. The Bills also went on to make a mockery of their opponent. They intercepted Carson Palmer and the Cardinals offense four times and sacked him five times. They also managed to recover a fumble and score a touchdown. Both teams netted somewhere near 20 fantasy points.

Running Total:

  • Week 1: 49ers D vs. Rams = 14 points
  • Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns = 10 points
  • Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Browns= 3 points
    Total = 27 Points
    Our 27 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the 9th best defense in the league. We will look for that number to improve this week!
