This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.
Dolphins (vs. Titans): Marcus Mariota has struggled badly this season. One of the premises of chasing defenses is to find QB that has been less than stellar. Mariota has struggled with decision making all year that has led to turnovers and touchdowns for opposing defenses. The Dolphins haven’t been great but they have a good matchup this week.
Bears (@ Colts): The Colts offensive line is abysmal. They allowed the Jaguars to sack Andrew Luck 6 times this past weekend. The Bears defense is better than the Jags and should put pressure on Luck and could force him into some turnovers.
Revisiting Last Week:
Titans (@ Texans): The thing that we were banking on was that Brock Osweiler would turn the ball over and he did twice. The Titans just didn’t do enough to put pressure on him to give us the fantasy numbers we desire. The Texans scored early and often in the first half, but the Titans defense actually did a good job during the second half of keeping them off the board. They ended up allowing 27 points, 2 INTs, and had 1 sack.
Redskins (vs. Browns): The Redskins recovered the phantom fumble this week. Duke Johnson Jr. went down and lost the football but was able to grab it back quickly. He stood up and handed the ball to the ref while two Redskins were on the ground fighting for the phantom ball. The ref then inexplicably awarded the Redskins possession. Even more shocking was that their was no review or challenge by the Browns. What a blunder. The Redskins finished the day giving up 20 points, had 1 INT, 2 fumble recoveries (sorta), and 1 sack.
Cowboys (@ 49ers): After getting down early in the game the Cowboys were able to hold the 49ers to 17 points. They stayed relatively quite on defense only gathering 1 INT and a sack.
Pipe Dream:(Team we wish we picked up)
Jaguars (vs. Colts): Defenses weren’t great this week, but the highly unowned Jags performed the best of the rest. They managed to sack Andrew Luck 6 times and force him into 1 INT while giving up 27 points. If the Colts offensive line doesn’t step up, then it could be a team worth chasing.
We got to put our money where our mouth is, so here is how we have done so far this season!
- Week 1: 49ers D vs. Rams = 14 points
- Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns = 10 points
- Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Browns= 3 points
- Week 4: Titans D vs. Texans= 5 points
Total = 32 Points
Our 32 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the 10th best defense in the league. We will look for that number to improve this week!
