Chasing Defense: Week 7

by Chris Foster

This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.

This Week

Dolphins (vs. Bills): Tyrod Taylor has averaged just over 150 yards passing the last 4 games. The one we have to worry about is LeSean McCoy. The Dolphins have only given up 1 touchdown on the ground this year. They have given up some yards on the ground but the whole goal when grabbing a fantasy defense is to keep them out of the end zone, force some turnovers, and maybe grab a few sacks. I think the Dolphins give us the best chance to do that this week!

Buccaneers (@ SF): The play here is that you get Colin Kaepernick in his second game as a starter this year. He was very pedestrian in his first start and you hope the Bucs can force him into some mistakes. There is a chance that Carlos Hyde (shoulder) may not play this week, and that would help our cause even more. If you can’t snare the Dolphins, then the Bucs may be a good choice.

Revisiting Last Week:

Lions (vs. Rams): Our worst week yet of chasing defenses. The struggling Kase Keenum managed to pick the Lions apart on Sunday. He threw for 321 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Lions did manage to snare an interception late in the game and were only able to pull Keenum down 2 times for sacks. They finished with 2 fantasy points.

Giants (vs. Ravens): The Giants didn’t fare much better this week. They have up 23 points to the Ravens and managed only 2 sacks. If you took the Giants or the Lions this week you were stuck with 2 fantasy points.

Pipe Dream: (Team we wish we picked up)

Chargers (@ Broncos): Looking back this Thursday night pickup would have been a good one. In a relatively low scoring defensive week the Chargers mustered out somewhere near 11 fantasy points. They allowed the Broncos only 13 points, grabbed 2 fumble recoveries, and were able to sack Trevor Siemian 2 times.

Running Total:

We got to put our money where our mouth is, so here is how we have done so far this season!

  • Week 1: 49ers D vs. Rams = 14 points
  • Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns = 10 points
  • Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Browns= 3 points
  • Week 4: Titans D vs. Texans= 5 points
  • Week 5: Dolphins D vs. Titans= 7 points
  • Week 6: Lions D vs. Rams= 2 points
    Total = 41 Points
Our 41 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the 8th best defense in the league. We will look for that number to improve this week!
