This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.
Cowboys (v. PHI): I like the Cowboys at home on Sunday night, a week after their bye, against a rookie quarterback. Now, Carson Wentz has been stellar so far this season, but he has throw 3 interceptions and been sacked 8 times in the last games. The Cowboys haven’t allowed more than 20 points since week 2 and have forced a turnover in every game except one. I think all that sets up for a big night for the Cowboys defense. They are available in nearly 95% of leagues!
Jets (@ CLE): Well, the Jets haven’t been very good on defense this year, but the are playing the Browns this week. The Browns have been one of the worst offenses in football this year. If rookie Kevin Hogan is back under center then the Browns may be the top play this week. Yet, all signs point to the Browns getting back either Josh McCown or Cody Kessler. That should boost the Browns offense some, but I still really like the Jets defense this week.
Revisiting Last Week:
Dolphins (vs. Bills): The Dolphins got us somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 fantasy points this past weekend. They gave up 25 points and had 4 sacks in the game. Unfortunately, they were not able to turn Tyrod Taylor over any. They did, however, drop a few opportunities. The Bills also managed to score a late garbage time TD after the game was put away that hurt our point production. Wish we could have done better last week, but we definitely could have done worse.
Buccaneers (@ SF): The Bucs were our second play and if you chose to with the Bucs you would have been pretty happy. The Bucs managed to get 13 fantasy points depending on you scoring settings. They allowed only 17 points to the 49ers, had 1 INT, 2 fumble recoveries, and 4 sacks. Pretty good for a defense that came into the game as one of the league’s worst. They were the 4th best defense on Sunday.
Pipe Dream: (Team we wish we picked up)
The Buccaneers were the pipe dream last week. Every other defense that scored higher was owned in 20% or more of leagues. The Giants, who were owned in 35% of leagues, finished the day with 4 interceptions and 3 sacks of Keenum, we were a week late on him.
We got to put our money where our mouth is, so here is how we have done so far this season!
- Week 1: 49ers D vs. Rams = 14 points
- Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns = 10 points
- Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Browns= 3 points
- Week 4: Titans D vs. Texans= 5 points
- Week 5: Dolphins D vs. Titans= 7 points
- Week 6: Lions D vs. Rams= 2 points
- Week 7: Dolphins D vs. Bills= 6 points
Total = 41 Points
Our 47 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the 9th best defense in the league. We will look for that number to improve this week!
