Monday’s Reflections: Week 9

by Chris Foster

After sitting down and watching football literally all day on Sunday, it often leaves me with several reflections on the day’s events. In this piece every week, I will chronicle those reflections.

Cam Newton: We talked about Newton this past week in our Four Corner Debate. I was pretty emphatic that he would be okay and even talked about him being a quarterback that could get you through the stretch run of your fantasy season. Coming into the game on Sunday he had throw 1 touchdown or less in 3 of his last 4 games. Well, he did it again on Sunday throwing for just 1 touchdown against an anything but stellar Rams secondary. He also only had 16 yards rushing, which is half of what he has been producing this season. I am still sticking with Cam down the stretch but it is definitely concerning. Maybe if he focused as much on his play as his post game outfits he would be better off.

Detroit Lions: The Lions are now neck and neck with the Vikings after their win over them on Sunday. The Vikings have taken a major step back since starting the season 5-0, losing 3 straight games. The Lions are definitely a contender in the NFC North. Their defense isn’t very good, and with the retirement of Calvin Johnson at the end of last year, many thought the Lions were going to be in for a long season. Yet, here they sit, near the top of the division and Matthew Stafford has the offense clicking. Maybe, Stafford was right at the beginning of the year when he said the offense could be better without the future Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson. We thought he was crazy, but maybe not! There comeback Sunday led by Stafford was a thing of beauty, all the way down to Golden Tates high wire act that was finished with a flip!

Timeshare in New Orleans: Another thing that was debated in our Four Corner Debate on Friday was the New Orleans Saints backfield. Ingram has been less than stellar this season, but I made the comment in that article that against a poor San Francisco run defense that Mark Ingram could likely have a big day and even win the job back. Well, he did manage to have a huge day! He had 158 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries as well as 2 receptions for 13 yards and a score. Pretty dominant numbers. The issue is that Tim Hightower received 8 more carries than Ingram,  producing only 87 yards. Which means that he ran for less than 4 yards per carry. Hightower is still going to receive carries, and this is still going to be a timeshare going forward, but I still like Ingram better than his competitor.

Big Ben and the Pittsburgh Steelers: I am not sure what it is with the Pittsburgh Steelers playing at the Baltimore Ravens but Ben Roethlisberger has a history of struggling against the flock. Big Ben is 9-9 in the regular season against the Ravens with an under 60% completion percentage. In his 18 regular season games against the Ravens, he has only thrown for more than 2 touchdowns 3 times. He has also never thrown for more than 2 touchdowns against them in 3 playoff games either. The Ravens seem to have Roethlisberger’s number. If Ben is slowed, then the whole Pittsburgh offense is slowed, and that was evident on Sunday as the Steelers didn’t find the end zone until halfway through the 4th quarter. LeVeon Bell only had 32 yards on 14 carries as well. The only bright spot, thankfully, if you own Antonio Brown, was that he was able to cash in some points in garbage time as he finished with 7 receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Travis Kelce: Oh Travis Kelce. Coming off a huge game a week ago against the Indianapolis Colts the Chiefs had another good match-up for their passing attack against the Jaguars Sunday. Travis Kelce had managed to reel in 5 catches for 58 yards through early in the fourth quarter. That, however, is when the fireworks started to happen! Nick Foles delivered a 12-yard pass to the back of the end zone to Kelce who did not make the catch. Kelce thought there should have been a pass interference flag, and then, well, just watch…..

My favorite part of the whole thing is that Kelce was so upset that he didn’t get the flag, he flagged the official!

toss-0

Kelce will surely get fined, but at least it was super entertaining!
