This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.
Dolphins (@ Rams): This one should be a layup. The Dolphins are owned in less than 10% of defenses and are going to be a desired play this week. Obviously, with rookie Jared Goff making his debut, everyone wants a piece of the pie. Hopefully, this will be a big piece! We bank on the rookie making his fair share of mistakes, and if he looks anything like he did in the preseason, we expect that to be true!
Steelers (@ Browns): The Steelers defense hasn’t been great this season, but one thing that can help a struggling defense is to play the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers are only owned in 17% of leagues, so if you can’t get the Dolphins, then the Steelers are likely your next best play.
Worst case scenario, if you can’t get either of these teams, roll with Raiders against the Texans.
Revisiting Last Week:
Redskins (v. Vikings): The Redskins finished with 5 points in most defensive standard leagues. That is a big letdown for us. Especially coming off our big performance by the Dolphins a week ago. It was a pretty quiet day for the Skins as they allowed 20 points, had 1 interception, and 3 sacks. Most of those sacks came on the last drive of the day as well.
Pipe Dream: (Team we wish we picked up)
Bucs (vs. Chicago): This was the team to own and if you remember from last week I said that I didn’t particularly like any of the other matchups. I said though that the Bucs against the Bears is one to go for if you couldn’t get the Redskins. If that was your choice then it paid off big time! They had somewhere in the neighborhood of 23 points on the back of 2 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries, a handful of sacks, and a touchdown. The Redskins weren’t the worst choice, but let’s hope that you made this one instead.
We got to put our money where our mouth is, so here is how we have done so far this season!
- Week 1: 49ers D vs. Rams = 14 points
- Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns = 10 points
- Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Browns= 3 points
- Week 4: Titans D vs. Texans= 5 points
- Week 5: Dolphins D vs. Titans= 7 points
- Week 6: Lions D vs. Rams= 2 points
- Week 7: Dolphins D vs. Bills= 6 points
- Week 8: Cowboys D vs. Eagles= 7 points
- Week 9: Dolphins D vs. Jets= 13 points
- Week 10: Redskins D vs. Vikings= 5 points
Total = 72 Points
Our 72 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the 7th best defense in the league. We will look for that number to improve this week!
