Chasing Defense: Week 12

This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.

This Week:

We have three really good matchups for you this week. Feel free to play any of these and expect a good return on your investment.

Saints (v. Rams): The Saints get their shot at rookie QB Jared Goff. Last week the Rams were able to play ball control against a subpar Dolphins offense, and in return they did not ask Goff to do very much. This week, however, they are traveling to the SuperDome and face a high powered offense led by Drew Brees. Goff is going to have to air it out and try to make plays if the Rams want to stay in the game. If Goff has to do that, I want the Saints defense.

Steelers (@ Colts): The Steelers look like they are going to get to face Scott Tolzien and not Andrew Luck in a Thursday night matchup. If Luck were to clear concussion protocol before the kickoff on Thursday night then take this matchup off the board. Yet, if the Steelers get to face Tolzien, I like this defense for the second week in a row.

Titans (@Chicago): Another backup quarterback will be in the game against the Titans defense. After the Jay Cutler injury it looks like Matt Barkley will be next in line. The Titans secondary has struggled some lately, but I like this matchup against a third string QB in a less than stellar offense.

Revisiting Last Week:

Dolphins (@ Rams): The Dolphins faced the Rams rookie QB Jared Goff in his season debut and the Rams remained very conservative. They actually led the Dolphins the entire game until about the last 5 minutes. The Dolphins D surrendered only 10 points but did very little after that. They finished with 1 fumble recovery and 1 sack. They netted you somewhere between 6-8 points depending on your league’s defensive setup.

Steelers (@ Browns): In my league I got outbid for the Dolphins this week and didn’t have a chance to pick them up. I happily settled for the Steelers defense against a struggling Cleveland team. Not to mention the weather was horrible for this one. If this was the move you had to make, then you were likely as pleased as I was. They were the best defense to own this week after giving up only 9 points, gathering 8 sacks, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery, and even scored a touchdown.

Pipe Dream: (Team we wish we picked up)

Steelers (@ Browns): That was the matchup to own. If they would have been our official Chasing Defense play last week (even though I actually did play them) then we would have the 4th best ranked defense in the league.

Running Total:

We got to put our money where our mouth is, so here is how we have done so far this season!

  • Week 1: 49ers D vs. Rams = 14 points
  • Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns = 10 points
  • Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Browns= 3 points
  • Week 4: Titans D vs. Texans= 5 points
  • Week 5: Dolphins D vs. Titans= 7 points
  • Week 6: Lions D vs. Rams= 2 points
  • Week 7: Dolphins D vs. Bills= 6 points
  • Week 8: Cowboys D vs. Eagles= 7 points
  • Week 9: Dolphins D vs. Jets= 13 points
  • Week 10: Redskins D vs. Vikings= 5 points
  • Week 11: Dolphins D vs. Rams= 8 points
    Total = 80 Points
Our 72 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the 7th best defense in the league. We will look for that number to improve this week!
