Chasing Defense: Week 13

by Chris Foster

This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.

This Week:

Bears (v. 49ers): Colin Kaepernick has been on fire as of late, but it is about time for him to cool off. The Bears were not good at home against the Titans last week, but that is the first team they have struggled against at home all season from a defensive standpoint. Look for them to get to Kaepernick and turn him over some in this game as he is prone to throw some interceptions.

Jaguars (v. Broncos): The Broncos Trevor Siemian had a pretty good night on Sunday night, but his offensive line still gave up 5 sacks. It was also the first time that he hadn’t thrown an interception in 3 games. I like the Jags in Jacksonville. If you can’t get the Bears, roll with the Jags.

Revisiting Last Week:

Saints (v. Rams): I gave you three good plays last week and told you to play any of them. Two of the three were very good plays! The Saints were one of them, and since I listed them first they are going to be the team we use as our official defense of the week. The Saints gave up 21 points to Jared Goff but they were able to grab 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery to go along with 3 sacks. That was good enough for 9 points in most standard fantasy leagues.

Steelers (@ Colts): The Steelers were the best play of the three on Thursday night against an Andrew Luckless Colts. They only gave up 7 points, had 2 interceptions and 3 sacks. That was good enough for about 10 fantasy points in most standard defensive leagues.

Titans (@ Bears): The Titans were the odd man out against Matt Barkley and the Bears. Barkley actually played pretty well. More importantly, the Bears offensive line protected him. The Titans gave up 21 points and did have 2 interceptions, but they did not record a single sack.

Pipe Dream: (Team we wish we picked up)

Buccaneers (v. Seahawks): What a day for the Bucs defense. They allowed only 5 points the Seahawks, had 2 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, and managed to get to Russell Wilson 6 times. They finished with around 18 points in most fantasy leagues.

Running Total:

We got to put our money where our mouth is, so here is how we have done so far this season!

  • Week 1: 49ers D vs. Rams = 14 points
  • Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns = 10 points
  • Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Browns= 3 points
  • Week 4: Titans D vs. Texans= 5 points
  • Week 5: Dolphins D vs. Titans= 7 points
  • Week 6: Lions D vs. Rams= 2 points
  • Week 7: Dolphins D vs. Bills= 6 points
  • Week 8: Cowboys D vs. Eagles= 7 points
  • Week 9: Dolphins D vs. Jets= 13 points
  • Week 10: Redskins D vs. Vikings= 5 points
  • Week 11: Dolphins D vs. Rams= 8 points
  • Week 12: Saints D vs. Rams= 9 points
    Total = 89 Points
Our 89 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the 6th best defense in the league. We will look for that number to improve this week!
