This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.
** We will be back next week to recap the year of Chasing Defense 2016!!***
Redskins (@ Giants): Well, we gambled on the Redskins 2 weeks ago and it didn’t pay off, so it is time to do that again! They owned in less that 10% of leagues and this is basically the first round of the playoffs for them. If they win, they are likely in the playoffs. The Giants, have already clinched a playoff birth, and really have nothing to play for Sunday. It could be that the Giants rest some starters and take it easy, which would be good for the Skins defense. Even if they don’t, the Skins should be fired up and we know that Eli can turn the ball over. #HTTR
Bucs (v. Panthers): We tried Cam two weeks ago and he decided to play good. Then, this past week he was horrible again. After the game in his press conference he was quoted saying that he and some of the guys for the Panthers need to take a sabbatical. Maybe he forgot there was one more week in the season. Let’s hope he did anyway. We are going to roll a Bucs defense that has been improving out against him!
Revisiting Last Week:
Titans (@ Jags): Well, that didn’t go as expected. The Titans gave up 38 points, had 1 turnover, and 2 sacks against the reeling Jags. Not only did the Titans defense get manhandled by one of the worst teams in the NFL, they lost their starting quarterback as well. Thanks for the 1 fantasy point Titans.
49ers (@ Rams): We touted this as our most dareful play of the year and it paid off. The 49ers defense has been pretty bad except in both of their matchups against the Rams. After giving up 21 points, they garnered 8 fantasy points by having 4 sacks and 2 interceptions. I feel really good about that gamble and am glad I chose this as our matchup of the week last week!
Pipe Dream: (Team we wish we picked up)
Redskins (@ Bears): We were apparently a week early on the Redskins. I thought that they would be strong last Monday night against the Panthers as they were playing for their playoff lives. I thought Cam would struggle on Monday Night in front of a hostile crowd in Landover. Wrong. I was very wrong. Everything I managed about that matchup was what happened this week. Unrelated to the Redskins defense, Cam stunk this past weekend, and the Redskins defense took it to the Chicago Bears. They gave up 21 points and only had 1 sack, but they did manage to snare 5 interceptions that was good enough for about 13 fantasy points in standard leagues.
We got to put our money where our mouth is, so here is how we have done so far this season!
- Week 1: 49ers D vs. Rams = 14 points
- Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns = 10 points
- Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Browns= 3 points
- Week 4: Titans D vs. Texans= 5 points
- Week 5: Dolphins D vs. Titans= 7 points
- Week 6: Lions D vs. Rams= 2 points
- Week 7: Dolphins D vs. Bills= 6 points
- Week 8: Cowboys D vs. Eagles= 7 points
- Week 9: Dolphins D vs. Jets= 13 points
- Week 10: Redskins D vs. Vikings= 5 points
- Week 11: Dolphins D vs. Rams= 8 points
- Week 12: Saints D vs. Rams= 9 points
- Week 13: Bears D vs. 49ers= 15 points (End of Regular Season= 104 PTS, 4th Best Def.)
- Week 14: Titans D vs. Broncos= 10 Points
- Weel 15: Redskins D vs. Panthers= 2 points
- Week 16: 49ers D vs. Rams= 11 point
Total = 116 Points
Our 127 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the 3rd best defense in the league. That is what chasing defense is supposed to do, give you the best possible defense without having to use a high draft pick on a defense. If you played all the defenses we had listed for the season, you would have had the 4th best defense in the league! Now on to the playoff charge!!
