Chasing Defense: Week 1

by Chris Foster

This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week. We will have one “Play of the Week” (the one we will use for our running total), and then a couple of other good plays in case our “Play of the Week” defense is taken in your league. Here we go!

Play of the Week:

Rams (v. Colts): With Andrew Luck still sidelined, that means that Scott Tolzien will be under center for the Colts. He is not one of the leagues premier back-ups and often struggled in the preseason. Even without Aaron Donald up front for the Rams, I like their opportunity to do some damage against the Colts!

Others this Week:

Steelers (@ Browns): The Steelers get the first shot at rookie QB DeShone Kizer. It is probable that Kizer will not make it through his first game unscathed. It also figures that the Browns should be playing from behind most of the afternoon, which means lots of drop backs for Kizer, which gives the Steelers more opportunities for turnovers and sacks!

Bills (v. Jets): The New York Jets may not be a competent offense this season. Josh McCown will play QB for the Jets and he brings a 2-20 record with him over the last 3 seasons as a starter. He has been known to throw some INTs and his receiving corps is in shambles. I feel comfortable starting the Bill this week against the Jets!

Next week we will start with our running total and put our money where our mouth is and see how we do in the season as we pick and choose what defenses to start each week.
