Down to the Wire: Week 2 Adds

by Chris Foster

Each week we will take a look at players who are more than likely on your waiver-wire that can be added to your team and help you this week. One of the biggest complaints with waiver wire add articles is that many of these guys are not available in your league. Using ESPN’s ownership statistics, everyone mentioned in this article has 50% or lower ownership status. This article will be divided into two parts, standard and deep leagues. The players in the deeper league wire are typically guys that you can stash that have upside. If you use a Free Agent Auction Bidding (FAAB) system, in parenthesis will be the percentage of your budget we would use on each player. In those type leagues, know the bidding history of your opponents and adjust accordingly. Players are ranked in order by their position.

Since Down to the Wire only highlights players who are owned by less than half of owners in ESPN leagues, I first want to give you a list of guys who are only owned in 50-75% of leagues that would be premium adds over any other player in most circumstances (depending on your positional needs). (Percentage owned in parentheses)

Quarterback

  1. Phillip Rivers (66%)

Running Back

  1. Derrick Henry (70%)- Still the top handcuff to own
  2. Chris Thompson (64%)
  3. Rex Burkhead (50%)

Wide Receiver

  1. Danny Amendola (74%)- Taken on the Julian Edelman role in NE

Tight End

  1. Hunter Henry (73%)- I still believe Henry
  2. Austin Hooper (51%)
  3. Jason Witten (72%)

Standard League Adds:

Quarterbacks

QB Alex Smith (41% owned)(FAAB 2-5%)- Smith was the best QB on the field Thursday night playing against future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, but he is still just a great streaming option when given the chance.

QB Carson Wentz (45% owned)(FAAB 2-5%)- Wentz looks to be the real deal. Now that he has some weapons around him there is a good chance that he can finish inside the top 12 QBs in the league.

Running Backs

RB Tarik Cohen (23% owned)(FAAB 40-50%): Tarik Cohen isn’t going away. That is bad news for Jordan Howard owners. Cohen’s usage reminded me of how the Falcons use Tevin Coleman and that is what I expect the rest of the season. He will get his touches and is extremely valuable in PPR formats. There may not be another RB the rest of the season on the waiver wire that provides what Cohen can. I know it is week 1, but go ahead and spend that money!  **PPR SPECIAL**

RB Kerwynn Williams (5% owned)(FAAB 10-20%): He will be one of the top adds this week because of the David Johnson injury news. Williams will give you some opportunity but doesn’t have the greatest talent. He is worth adding to your roster just because of the volume he will receive, but beware of the Cardinals going out and signing someone, possibly Chris Johnson. Therefore, he might be a better proactive pickup.

RB Alvin Kamara (5% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): It seemed pretty clear to me on Monday night that the Saints know how they want to use their RB trio. Kamara is going to get touches and receive work in passing situations. He will only get more opportunity as the season progresses. **PPR SPECIAL**

RB Chris Carson (3% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): One thing is clear, Eddie Lacy doesn’t have it anymore. Therefore, it seems like it is Thomas Rawls or bust for the Seahawks. The one man that can help outside of Rawls is Carson. He has looked good in camp and was underrated in week 1.

RB Alfred Morris (1% owned)(FAAB 2-3%): This has one purpose if you are the Zeke owner, or someone who is trying to stay ahead of the Zeke news regarding the NFL’s appeal to Zeke’s case, then pick up Morris. He looks like he is the backup, not Darren McFadden.

RB Buck Allen (1% owned)(FAAB 2-3%): Allen had 21 carries for 72 yards this past week. That isn’t great production, but it is a great opportunity. With Danny Woodhead set to miss some time, Allen will see an increase in his role and pass catching opportunities. **PPR SPECIAL**

Wide Receivers

WR Kenny Golladay (21% owned)(FAAB 40-50%): If you need help after week 1 at the WR position then look no further. You are going to have to spend to get Kenny G. though. He had a great preseason and racked up two terrific touchdowns against the Cardinal’s secondary in week 1. Here is your chance.

WR Cooper Kupp (20% owned)(FAAB 35-45%): Here is your second shot if you need WR help. If you miss out on Golladay or want a backup option then go with Kupp. He is another rookie who produced all camp and had a great week 1. He will be better suited for PPR leagues that Golladay. **PPR SPECIAL**

WR Kendal Wright (7% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): Someone for the Bears has to catch the ball now that they have lost White and Meredith. Here is your best shot.

WR Travis Benjamin (1% owned)(FAAB 2-3%): Benjamin was a forgotten man with all the receivers in San Diego. The Chargers made it a point this preseason to make it known the threat that Benjamin represents now that he is healthy. He will be a boom/bust play each week.

Tight Ends

TE Coby Fleener (16% owned)(FAAB 10-15%): Fleener may have finally found a groove in year 2 with the Saints. He looked pretty good last night hauling in 5 receptions and a touchdown. I think he finishes inside the Top 12.

TE Charles Clay (12% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): Clay is one of the only few targets left in Buffalo and Tyrod Taylor will get him the ball. He dropped another touchdown this past week or his stat line would have been even more impressive. He will continue to get fed and finish inside the Top 12 as well.

TE Evan Engram (12% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): The Giants offense looked really bad on Sunday night. Like really, really bad! Evan Engram was still able to put up a modest stat line of 4 receptions with 44 yards. He will continue to be involved.

TE Jesse James (14% owned)(FAAB 2-5%): James scored two touchdowns in week 1. Yet, his time may be coming to a close as the Steelers traded for Vance McDonald at the end of camp and coach Mike Tomlin was quoted saying the rest of his tight ends “were JV players.” Yet, James will hold down the position in a pass happy offense for the foreseeable future.
