Down to the Wire: Week 3 Adds

by Chris Foster

Each week we will take a look at players who are more than likely on your waiver-wire that can be added to your team and help you this week. One of the biggest complaints with waiver wire add articles is that many of these guys are not available in your league. Using ESPN’s ownership statistics, everyone mentioned in this article has 50% or lower ownership status. This article will be divided into two parts, standard and deep leagues. The players in the deeper league wire are typically guys that you can stash that have upside. If you use a Free Agent Auction Bidding (FAAB) system, in parenthesis will be the percentage of your budget we would use on each player. In those type leagues, know the bidding history of your opponents and adjust accordingly. Players are ranked in order by their position.

Since Down to the Wire only highlights players who are owned by less than half of owners in ESPN leagues, I first want to give you a list of guys who are only owned in 50-75% of leagues that would be premium adds over any other player in most circumstances (depending on your positional needs). (Percentage owned in parentheses)

Quarterback

  1. Phillip Rivers (62%)

Running Back

  1. Derrick Henry (71%)- Still the top handcuff to own
  2. Chris Thompson (70%)
  3. Tarik Cohen (51%)- Especially with Jordan Howard banged up

Wide Receiver

  1. Danny Amendola (70%)- Taken on the Julian Edelman role in NE when healthy

Tight End

  1. Hunter Henry (73%)
  2. Jack Doyle (74%)
  3. Austin Hooper (51%)
  4. Jason Witten (72%)

Standard League Adds:

Quarterbacks

QB Alex Smith (42% owned)(FAAB 2-5%)- Smith wasn’t as good as he was on the opening night of the NFL, but he still turned in solid numbers this past weekend.

QB Carson Wentz (47% owned)(FAAB 2-5%)- Wentz looks to be the real deal. Now that he has some weapons around him there is a good chance that he can finish inside the top 12 QBs in the league.

Running Backs

RB Buck Allen (9% owned)(FAAB 20-30%): Allen had 14 carries for 66 yards and caught 5 passes including a touchdown pass from Joe Flacco. As long as Danny Woodhead is out, Allen will be productive enough to appear in your flex. **PPR SPECIAL**

RB Chris Carson (9% owned)(FAAB 20-30%): One thing is clear, Eddie Lacy doesn’t have it anymore and he was a healthy scratch this week. Thomas Rawls didn’t have it this past weekend and after awarding Carson with 21 touches, it looks like it could be his job going forward.

RB Rex Burkhead (48% owned)(FAAB 10-20%): With all the injuries in New England, Burkhead was beginning to see time in the slot against New Orleans this week. He then left the game with an injury. He should be okay and he can provide you with a decent flex play.

RB Chris Johnson (2% owned)(FAAB 10-20%): It became clear about halfway through the game that Johnson would once again become the lead back for the Cardinals. I wouldn’t expect much from him, but he could be useful in a pinch.  **PPR SPECIAL**

RB Alvin Kamara (5% owned)(FAAB 2-5%): It seemed pretty clear to me on Monday night that the Saints know how they want to use their RB trio. Kamara is going to get touches and receive work in passing situations. He will only get more opportunity as the season progresses. **PPR SPECIAL**

RB Samaje Perine (2% owned)(2-5%): Keep an eye on Rob Kelly and his injury status this week. Perine would be the next man up in Washington.

Wide Receivers

WR Kenny Golladay (38% owned)(FAAB 10-20%): Kenny G only had 1 catch on Monday night. I still think he will figure into the Lion future plans and could have a big season.

WR JJ Nelson (20% owned)(FAAB 10-15%): The truth of the matter is that Carson Palmer just doesn’t have the weaponry around him. Not only that, but Palmer looks done. That doesn’t sound promising for Nelson, but Nelson is one of the only targets left that Palmer trusts. After posting 5 catches for 120-yard performance and a touchdown on Sunday, look for him to be a hot commodity off the wire.

WR Rashard Higgins (1% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): He just got signed off the practice squad this week, but Matt Harmon loves him in his “Reception Perception.” He is far from a guarantee knowing his situation, but a shot in the dark here could pay off big. He was able to come in and go for 95 yards on 7 receptions on Sunday. Definitely someone worth holding.

WR Cooper Kupp (32% owned)(FAAB 5-15%): Kupp stats were not overwhelming after week 2, but he was still seeing the targets and you can tell that the kid is going to be special. **PPR SPECIAL**

WR Allen Hurns (7% owned)(FAAB 5-15%): Hurns found some garbage time touchdowns against the Titans on Sunday, but much like JJ Nelson, Blake Bortles doesn’t have a ton of options left to throw the ball to.

WR Sterling Shepard (41% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): As long as OBJ stays gimpy, Shepard will be productive. Especially since they aren’t using Brandon Marshall.

Tight Ends

TE Coby Fleener (16% owned)(FAAB 5-15%): Fleener may have finally found a groove in year 2 with the Saints. He looked pretty good last night hauling in 5 receptions and a touchdown. I think he finishes inside the Top 12.

TE Evan Engram (10% owned)(FAAB 5-15%): The Giants offense looked really bad on again on Monday night, but Evan Engram was still able to put up a modest stat line. He will continue to get more involved as the year goes on.

TE Eric Ebron (29%owned(FAAB 2-5%): Ebron is always a touchdown threat, and the way his QB is playing right now he may find some continued value as a streamer in your league.
