Down to the Wire: Week 4 Adds

by Chris Foster

Each week we will take a look at players who are more than likely on your waiver-wire that can be added to your team and help you this week. One of the biggest complaints with waiver wire add articles is that many of these guys are not available in your league. Using ESPN’s ownership statistics, everyone mentioned in this article has 50% or lower ownership status. This article will be divided into two parts, standard and deep leagues. The players in the deeper league wire are typically guys that you can stash that have upside. If you use a Free Agent Auction Bidding (FAAB) system, in parenthesis will be the percentage of your budget we would use on each player. In those type leagues, know the bidding history of your opponents and adjust accordingly. Players are ranked in order by their position.

Since Down to the Wire only highlights players who are owned by less than half of owners in ESPN leagues, I first want to give you a list of guys who are only owned in 50-75% of leagues that would be premium adds over any other player in most circumstances (depending on your positional needs). (Percentage owned in parentheses)

  1. Phillip Rivers (59%)
  2. Carson Wentz (57%)

Running Back

None in 50-75% Range

Wide Receiver

  1. Danny Amendola (72%)- Taken on the Julian Edelman role in NE when healthy
  2. Corey Davis (69%)
  3. John Brown (53%)

Tight End

  1. Hunter Henry (73%)

Standard League Adds:

QB Alex Smith (43% owned)(FAAB 2-5%)- Smith wasn’t as good as he was on the opening night of the NFL, but he still turned in solid numbers this past weekend. He continues to look like a QB1 on the season.

QB Trevor Siemian (36% owned)(FAAB 2-5%)- Siemian has been unbelievable at home this season, and this week he will be at home against Oakland.

Running Backs

RB Buck Allen (38% owned)(FAAB 5-15%): Allen struggles this past week, but he is someone still really valuable in a PPR format with West still nursing an injury while Danny Woodhead is out. **PPR SPECIAL**

RB Chris Carson (42% owned)(FAAB 5-15%): Carson wasn’t as productive against the Titans this week, but it is clear that he has taken over that backfield. I would feel confident spending at least 15% on him.

RB Tarik Cohen (41% owned)(FAAB 15-25%): Cohen’s ownership has dipped again and he is available in nearly 60% of leagues. I would spend to make sure I got him on my roster. He continues to be productive and put up good numbers as the leading pass catcher in the Bears offense. ** PPR SPECIAL**

RB Wendall Smallwood (2% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): We can all take a moment of silence for Darren Sproles. With Sproles gone, that basically leaves Smallwood and Blount to handle the workload in Philly. Blount will vulture the TDs, but Smallwood looked productive during the numbers last week.

RB Jamaal Charles (23% owned)(FAAB 2-5%): If I owned CJ Anderson then I would make sure I went out and got Charles on my roster. Back to back weeks, Charles has looked good and this week he found the end zone. He isn’t 100% of what he was in KC, but he is close.  **PPR SPECIAL**

Wide Receivers

WR Mohammed Sanu (40% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): It has looked like in the last two weeks that Matt Ryan can sustain two receivers and keep them fantasy relevant. Sanu seems to be the beneficiary so far this season.

WR Devin Funchess (11% owned)(FAAB 5-10%):  Keep an eye on the injury of Kelvin Benjamin this week. If he were to miss time then Funchess would become the top WR target for the Panthers.

WR Allen Hurns (11% owned)(FAAB 5-15%): Hurns continues to be one of the more active targets for Blake Bortles and the London Jaguars.

WR Sterling Shepard (34% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): Shepard was even productive when OBJ was back this week. It looks like Shepard will continue to see more looks than Brandon Marshall.

Tight Ends

TE Charles Clay (9% owned)(FAAB 5-10%): Clay continues to be Tyrod Taylor’s favorite target especially around the end zone. He will continue to produce and finish as a TE1 on the season.

TE David Njoku (2% owned)(FAAB 2-5%): Njoku is a young up and comer. He has found the end zone in both of the last two weeks. It would appear that he is growing in chemistry with Deshone Kizer near the stripe.
