Chasing Defense: Week 8

This is a weekly column that looks at the best defenses to chase throughout each week of the season. The goal is to give you a few defenses that should be available in your league that will give you an advantage at the defensive position each week.

This Week:

This may be our hardest week yet. With so many teams on bye, there are very few options to choose from this week. Let’s give it our best shot!

Play of the Week:

Bucs (v. CAR): We will continue to chase Cam Newton’s poor play and this struggling offense. He was good until last week, let’s see if we can catch him in a slump.

OR

Browns (v. MIN): The Browns have actually been an underrated defense so far this year. Averaging just over 7 fantasy points a game in the last three weeks. They have also been pretty good at home, and we saw Kase Keenum look like a back up last week.

Revisiting Last Week:

Cowboys (@ SF): The Cowboys came through for us and put a stop to rookie QB CJ Beathard. They were not able to pick Beathard off but they did get 3 fumble recoveries while only allowing 10 points and accumulating 5 sacks. All in all that was good for about 15 fantasy points.

Dolphins (V. NYJ): The Dolphins gave up points to Josh McCown but manage to score us about 6 fantasy points after grabbing an INT, a fumble recovery, and totaling 3 sacks.

Saints (@ GB): The Saints won the game and slowed down Green Bays offense, but they didn’t help much when it came to fantasy production. They only gave up 17 points and had 1 INT, but they also only had 1 sack. It was good for about 5 fantasy points in most leagues.

Pipe Dream: (Team we wish we picked up)

Bears (v. CAR): The Bears feasted on Cam Newton and did it with defensive touchdowns and 2 interceptions. They managed to hold Newton and the Panther offense to 3 points and sacked him 5 times to go along with a fumble recovery. It was good enough for about 27 points in most leagues.

Running Total:

We got to put our money where our mouth is, so here is how we have done so far this season!

  • Week 1: Rams D vs. Colts= 27 points
  • Week 2: Ravens D vs. Browns= 16 Points
  • Week 3: Dolphins D vs. Jets= 4 Points
  • Week 4: Lions D @ Min= 11 points
  • Week 5: Bears D v. Min= 6 Points
  • Week 6: Skins D v. SF=  5 Points
  • Week 7: Cowboys D v. SF= 15 Points
  • Total = 84 Points
Our 84 points total would make our “Chasing Defense” teams rank as the #2 defense in the league. We will look for that number to improve this week!
